Eason Jordan resigned because what he said, and what CNN doesn't want released, was bad enough to merit his departure. What has been made clear to many in the US is that Jordan simply voiced the writings of one Nic Gowing of the BBC. Gowing hasn't resigned, won't resign, and won't be asked to resign because the BBC stands by the charge which Eason was caught making, namely, that US troops in Iraq are deliberately targetting journalists. Focus your fire on the BBC

Interesting perspective, that the 'blogosphere' in effect forced Eason Jordan out of CNN. Nobody forced him out---CNN decided that this was going to cost them viewership and money,
and canned him. This is not a free speech issue. Jordan is free to make baseless, slanderous remarks about people who are trying to ensure the safety of his country. He can't be prosecuted for that. He CAN, however be fired as a potential liability for his employer, who, progressive and liberal posturing aside, is in the business of making money.
How is it that Jordan's free speech is held so sacrosanct, while that of the blogging community somehow does not earn the same respect from the MSM?

Anchoress,

I wasn't saying that a witchunt had occurred, I was asking the question, is that what happened in this situation? If you read my full post, you'll see that, later in the post, I acknowledge that Eason Jordan has quite a track record of abusing his media voice and that you could reasonably conclude that he had this one coming.

You can lay out Mr. Jordan's track record and make your case, and it's a pretty convincing case.

Now the question becomes, are we, realizing the power we have to punish elements of the MSM if we don't like what they say, going to create our list of journalists or media organizations that we are going to actively go after? I hope not.

Thanks for your comments.

I don't know where you see "witchhunt." I see bloggers asking questions the msm refused to ask: What did this man REALLY say, because what we're hearing is a staggering and important charge. If it's true, why did he back off? Did he backoff or equivocate - there is a difference. Why won't he authorize release of the tape? These are not irresponsible questions - and all the man had to do was answer them openly and maybe admit his damn mouth ran off without his brains - and things might have played out very differently. There was no "witchhunt." These bloggers are the same ones who worked to get Trent Lott to resign as majority leader. Perspective, folks.

I would suggest that the issue is being accountable for words/actions, and the bigger the potential impact the more important one be wise and prudent.

Anyone who has a voice on the world stage and can either promote the cause of truth and justice or undermine it has a responsibility to do so. If Eason Jordan has evidence for what he said, out with it. We are a democracy and want to hold those who do evil accountable. If, on the other hand, all he can do is add fuel to anti-Americanism which undermines our cause and the safety of our troops in Iraq and elsewhere then he needs to be held accountable.

It should be apparent to all that there is one major obstacle in America's success in any theatre in the world, the will of the American people. A major determinant of the cost to the US is world opinion, how many are with us, and how many are against us. I am not suggesting for a moment that "whatever the US does is good without question", on the other hand, if France, Germany, and Russia were more interested in enforcing sanctions against Hussein and seeing and end to his tyranny than making their own deals with him maybe there would have been change in Iraq without an invasion.

If Jordan and CNN would have made the tapes available and either gave the evidence or uttered an apology I think he could still have his job. If he wanted to continue to mutter inuendo against the US and get away with it, he was out of luck.
