The important point typically missed is that human infants actually need their mothers, as do human toddlers. Like all primates, our young need years in their mother's arms and with their mother's milk to grow optimally. This is the beginning point of all discussions, yet it is typically jumped over. Until the actual needs of the children enter the equation, good decisions and good programs will not materialize.

We need to subsidize moms, not day care; we need to provide universal health care, we need years of paid maternity leave, we need child-friendly work places. We do not need to continue institutionalizing children and spreading detachment in families. Regardless of whose career is made more interesting.

As a college-educated woman who didn't have a child until my 30s, I find women who can't take about life, who can only talk about work, the biggest wasters of brains and educations around.
